父之历：剧情是从主角返回老家参加父亲的丧礼开始，从自己的记忆、以及许多人的口中回忆父亲的一生，并且发现许多过去刻意逃避与无法体会的事情。谷口的画工高明之处，在于用的线条虽然不多，但是却能从许多看似随手描绘的线条中，带出许多并没有画出来的细节和情绪。而每一个画面的场景分镜，更是把这本书那种带着淡淡乡愁的气氛表现无遗。 故事以主角阳一的父亲的葬礼为开场，借由前来吊唁的亲朋好友的描述让时光倒流，如拼图一般追忆出完整的父亲形象以及儿童眼中忽略了的似水流年。阳一的父母原本是恩爱夫妻，因为“鸟取大火”的关系而走上分手的道路，幼时的阳一出于对母亲离去的不解而深深怨恨着父亲，进而发展为成年之后的逃避。在他，父亲仅仅只是一个符号，心灵的沟壑隔阻了太久父子之间的交流，一如现在都市中许多家庭冷漠的亲子关系。欠缺理解与沟通。而阳一的父亲则是传统意义上的父亲形象，坚毅、隐忍、沉默、厚道，对子女和家庭心怀责任感与关爱，却从来不肯用明确的态度表现出来，而只是像一个旁人般持续付出自己的心力，哪怕因此而不获得子女的认同。
